Modern English Literature

Modern English Literature as taught by the present team covers in teaching and research English Literature from the Early Modern period to the present. Our specific focus lies on nineteenth-century literature as well as literature and science; literary representations of the natural world; animals in literature; conceptions of time; non-realistic forms of writing. It is our aim to represent the richness and variety Modern English Literature has to offer, to show what theory can contribute towards a better understanding of texts, and to encourage students to find their own positions and form independent ideas about literature.

Our team is closely involved with current international debates in the field, and contributes to a national as well as international positioning of our department by organizing conferences and workshops, by encouraging cooperation with other universities, and by building academic networks.
