Funding

The Faculty of Humanities Scholarship page details funding opportunites for graduate students in our department.

The Berrow Foundation awards six scholarships each year to enable graduates of eligible Swiss universities to undertake a course of graduate study at the University of Oxford as members of Lincoln College. Please visit their website for more information.

For (non-EEA) overseas students, enrollment fees for most English speaking universities outside Europe are prohibitively expensive. Therefore, students of the University of Bern can obtain grants or scholarships for their studies abroad, provided their need is well-founded. Further information can be obtained from the Professors of the Department of English, or the Erziehungsdirektion des Kantons Bern (ED), Abt. Ausbildungsbeiträge.

Before you apply for a grant from the ED, you should get a form from the department office confirming that a stay abroad is compulsory for students of English. Application forms for grants are available from the Abt. Ausbildungsbeiträge and can be requested in writing. Outside official opening hours, interviews with the officials are only by appointment. Applications for grants must be handed in as early as possible, at the latest three months after the beginning of your stay abroad - the money will be reimbursed after your return.

More information on this subject at: Stipendienberatung der SUB, or the VSS (Verein Schweizerischer Studentenschaften). You can obtain an exhaustive information leaflet about all kinds of grants, but mainly for studying at other Swiss universities.

PhD students and MA students working on their final thesis may apply for funding of expenses that arise from fieldwork or research in museums, archives or libraries abroad. For more information, visit the faculty website on fieldwork expenses.
